Why travellers come to Nepal
Nepal packs eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks, three UNESCO natural and cultural heritage clusters, and over a hundred ethnic communities into an area roughly the size of England. In one trip you can stand below Mount Everest, walk the medieval squares of Bhaktapur, raft the Trishuli river, and watch one-horned rhinos in Chitwan. The country is compact enough that a two-week itinerary can cover Himalaya, mid-hills, and subtropical jungle without rushing.
The classic regions
The Kathmandu Valley holds the country's UNESCO core — the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, plus Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath. Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna massif, with lakeside hotels, paragliding from Sarangkot, and the start of the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal trails. The Khumbu carries Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes. Mustang and Manaslu deliver high desert and remote Himalayan teahouse trekking. The Terai lowlands — Chitwan and Bardia — are wildlife country, with elephant-back and jeep safaris.
When to go
Pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) deliver the clearest mountain skies and the most stable trekking conditions. Winter (December to February) is excellent for cultural tours, Chitwan, and lower-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill. The monsoon (June to August) is the right window for rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang and Dolpo, where the high peaks block the clouds.
Entry, visa and flights
Most nationalities can buy a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu for 15, 30 or 90 days. Major air gateways into Kathmandu include New Delhi, Doha, Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Overland entry from India is open at Sunauli, Birgunj, Kakarbhitta and a handful of other crossings, and a short connecting flight to Pokhara, Lukla or Bharatpur removes most of the long road days for travellers with a tight schedule.
