Chitwan
Chitwan National Park
Chitwan National Park is a 932 km² UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal's Terai lowlands, home to an estimated 600 one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles, and over 500 bird species — accessed from Sauraha village on the Rapti River, 160 km southwest of Kathmandu. Last updated June 2026.
Wildlife you can expect to see
One-horned rhinoceros are Chitwan's headline species — roughly 600 individuals live in the park, and jeep safaris encounter them on most outings. Bengal tigers inhabit the sal forest interior but sightings are rare (estimated 120 tigers across the park); birdwatchers often find tiger tracks before seeing the cat itself.
Gharial crocodiles — fish-eating crocodiles with distinctive long snouts — bask on the Rapti and Narayani riverbanks. Mugger crocodiles and smooth-coated otters share the waterways. The park lists 543 bird species including Bengal florican, lesser adjutant stork, and multiple kingfisher and hornbill varieties.
Sloth bears, leopard, wild elephant, four-horned antelope, and Gangetic dolphin (in the Narayani River) round out the mammal list. Night safaris from select lodges occasionally spot fishing cats and civets.
Safari types and ethical standards
Jeep safaris are the primary viewing method — open-top 4x4 vehicles with a naturalist guide and park ranger enter the core area on designated tracks. Morning (6 am to 10 am) and afternoon (2 pm to 6 pm) slots offer the best light and animal activity. Canoe trips on the Rapti River drift past crocodiles, waterbirds, and riverside deer.
Guided jungle walks with two armed guides are available in the buffer zone — a closer perspective on tracks, plants, and smaller wildlife without the engine noise. Elephant bathing (observing elephants in the river) is available at some lodges; we do not book elephant-back riding, which Nepal's park authorities and ethical tourism standards discourage.
Holiday Maker Nepal works with lodges that employ local naturalists, pay park fees directly, and follow Chitwan National Park regulations. Every safari includes the mandatory park entry permit (currently NPR 2,000 per day for foreign visitors).
Tharu culture and village life
The Tharu people are the indigenous community of the Terai lowlands, with distinct architecture, cuisine, and a historical reputation for malaria resistance that allowed settlement in the region. Tharu Cultural Village programmes near Sauraha include stick dances, traditional meals, and craft demonstrations.
Sauraha village sits on the Rapti River opposite the park boundary — a compact strip of lodges, restaurants, and safari offices. The pace is slower than Kathmandu or Pokhara. Evening riverbank walks often end with rhino sightings at the water's edge as animals cross from the park to drink.
Best season and how to combine with other destinations
October to March is peak safari season — dry weather, tall grass cut back after monsoon, and animals congregating at water sources. April and May are hot (35 °C+) but excellent for tiger tracking as tigers follow prey to remaining waterholes. Monsoon (June to September) closes some tracks and brings leeches on jungle walks, though lodges offer lower rates.
Chitwan fits naturally between Kathmandu and Pokhara on the standard Nepal triangle: Kathmandu (3 nights) → Pokhara (3 nights) → Chitwan (2 nights) → Kathmandu (1 night). Overland from Pokhara takes 4 to 5 hours via Mugling. Flights to Bharatpur airport (20 minutes from Sauraha) operate seasonally.
Two nights is the minimum for two full safari sessions. Three nights allows a canoe trip, village visit, and buffer-zone walk without rushing. Our Nepal Highlight Tour and Discover Nepal packages include Chitwan with lodge, meals, and guided safaris pre-arranged.

Frequently asked
Answers from our specialists
The things travellers ask most, answered by guides who lead these trips, not by a script.
Tiger sightings are uncommon — roughly one in ten safaris in peak season. Rhino sightings are near-certain on jeep safaris. Bardia National Park in western Nepal offers better tiger odds for dedicated wildlife travellers.
Two nights gives two full safari sessions — enough for rhino, crocodile, and bird sightings. Three nights adds canoe trips, village visits, and a better chance of varied wildlife encounters.
Yes. Jeep safaris are suitable for all ages. Jungle walks have minimum age limits (typically 12+) set by individual lodges. Canoe trips are calm and appropriate for children with life jackets.
Tourist buses and private cars take 5 to 6 hours via the Prithvi Highway to Mugling, then south to Sauraha. Flights to Bharatpur airport take 20 minutes, plus a 30-minute drive to Sauraha. Our packages include the transfer.
