Where Vishnu meets the eternal flame

Muktinath is one of the four sacred sites every Hindu is meant to visit, alongside Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram. The shrine itself is small. What makes it extraordinary is what surrounds it.

108 sacred waterspouts

Stone-carved bull-headed spouts arranged in a semicircle behind the main shrine. Pilgrims bathe under each in sequence, one of the most physically demanding rituals in Hinduism. Water sourced from the Kali Gandaki, sub-zero year-round.

Jwala Maai eternal flame

Inside a small Buddhist gompa adjacent to the temple, a natural gas seep keeps a flame burning over running water. Revered by Hindus as Jwala Maai and by Buddhists as a self-arisen miracle. The flame has burned continuously for centuries.

Vishnu temple at 3,710 metres

The pagoda-style Sri Muktinath shrine houses a swayambhu Vishnu murti, one of the eight self-manifested Vishnu temples. The site sits in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna range, in Mustang district, with the Dhaulagiri massif on the southern horizon.

What Muktinath from India travellers ask before they book

Real questions from recent groups. Answers from the team that runs the trip.

  • Fly from your Indian city to Kathmandu, fly Kathmandu to Pokhara (25 minutes), then helicopter Pokhara to Muktinath (40 minutes one-way) with 30 to 40 minutes at the temple. Total round trip from Pokhara is under 3 hours.

  • No permit is needed for Indian pilgrims for the temple. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is required if you go by road through Jomsom, around 3,000 NPR per person, arranged by your tour operator.

  • Warm jacket and inner layers (Muktinath sits at 3,710 metres), comfortable closed shoes, valid ID, prasad and puja items if you wish to offer, and a refillable water bottle. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard but not inside the main shrine.

  • Yes, with the helicopter route. Children under 5 and adults over 75 should take the helicopter rather than the road option. Oxygen is on standby and the helicopter operators carry first-aid trained pilots.
