The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers an adventurous journey around the eighth-highest mountain in the world—Mount Manaslu (8,163m). This route remains relatively less frequented, providing an immersive experience into traditional Tibetan-influenced culture, dramatic river gorges, and high Himalayan passes. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through lush green hills, ancient villages, and majestic mountain scenery, ultimately culminating in the crossing of the Larkya La Pass (5,160m)—a highlight of this trek. From subtropical forests to high alpine pastures, this circuit showcases the immense geographical and cultural diversity of Nepal.
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative or guide and transferred to your hotel. Please note that due to traffic conditions, the transfer may take an additional 15 to 30 minutes. After checking in at the hotel, take some time to rest and recover from your journey. You can freshen up and relax before beginning any exploration. Make sure to prepare for your upcoming trek or further sightseeing in Kathmandu. Overnight stay will be at the hotel
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward the western hills of Nepal. Departing early, you’ll travel along the Prithvi Highway before branching north at Dhading and continuing along increasingly rugged roads beside the Budhi Gandaki River. This drive offers a mixture of rural Nepali life, terraced fields, and distant views of mountains. The final stretch of the road is rough and bumpy before you arrive at Machha Khola—a riverside village that serves as the starting point of your trek
Begin your trek by following the Budhi Gandaki River upstream through lush forested paths, crossing numerous suspension bridges along the way. The trail weaves through small settlements like Khorlabesi and Tatopani, known for its natural hot springs, and continues over rugged terrain with occasional stone steps and narrow gorges. As you ascend gradually through rocky trails and terraced hillsides, you'll reach the entry checkpoint at Jagat, a traditional stone-paved village, marking the start of the restricted area of the Manaslu Conservation Area.
From Jagat, ascend through terraced fields and charming villages such as Salleri and Sirdibas. The trail narrows as you approach Philim, a large Gurung village known for its stone-built houses and agricultural terraces. Continue trekking alongside the Budhi Gandaki, crossing several suspension bridges and navigating steep ups and downs. The path becomes more remote as you enter forested terrain filled with pine and bamboo. After a long but rewarding day, you’ll reach Deng, a small settlement surrounded by alpine vegetation and home to a mix of Gurung and Tibetan culture.
Today’s trail starts with a brief descent to the river followed by a steady climb through dense forest and several small settlements including Rana and Bihi. You’ll begin to notice stronger Tibetan influences as you ascend, passing mani walls and chortens along the route. The trail winds through deep gorges and offers intermittent views of Sringi Himal. After crossing several bridges and forested ridgelines, you’ll arrive at Namrung—a culturally rich village offering the first panoramic views of the Manaslu range
Begin the day with a steady climb through rhododendron and fir forests, passing traditional stone villages like Lihi and Sho. The trail offers increasingly open views of snow-covered peaks including Himalchuli (7,893m) and Manaslu (8,163m). As you approach Lho, a large village situated on a hillside, you’ll pass through chortens and prayer wheels. Don’t miss Ribung Monastery, which offers both spiritual insight and incredible views of the surrounding peaks.
Trek through enchanting pine forests and across glacial rivers with spectacular views of Manaslu, Peak 29, and other surrounding giants. Along the way, you’ll pass the picturesque settlement of Shyala, surrounded by farmland and high mountain scenery. Continue to Sama Gaun, the largest village in the region, nestled beneath the imposing face of Manaslu. This high-altitude village features traditional stone houses, a helipad, and a monastery.
Take a well-deserved rest day to acclimatize at this higher elevation. Recommended acclimatization hikes include a trip to Birendra Tal (a glacial lake), a half-day hike to Pungyen Gompa (4,000m), or a more demanding trek to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) for panoramic views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks. This is a vital rest day to help prevent altitude sickness and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Today’s trek is relatively short and scenic, passing through yak pastures and alpine meadows with constant views of snow-clad peaks. As you ascend gently, the valley opens up, and the air becomes thinner. You will cross wooden bridges and pass mani walls and monasteries. Samdo is a small Tibetan refugee village close to the Tibetan border, offering unique cultural encounters and insights into high-altitude living.
Start the morning with a gentle descent to the river and cross a wooden bridge before climbing steadily toward Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi. This high-altitude outpost is the final stop before the Larkya Pass. Though basic in terms of accommodation, Dharmasala provides essential shelter and stunning views of Larkya Glacier and surrounding peaks.
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. Start early to ascend gradually over rocky and icy terrain toward the Larkya La Pass. Reaching the summit at 5,160 meters, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. After soaking in the views, begin the steep descent over glacial moraines to Bhimthang, a serene alpine valley with breathtaking scenery.
Descend through lush rhododendron and pine forests with occasional views of Manaslu and Lamjung Himal. Pass through picturesque villages such as Gho and Tilje, gradually re-entering lower, warmer elevations. Upon reaching Dharapani, you’ll officially exit the Manaslu region and enter the Annapurna Circuit trail zone.
Start early for the drive back to Kathmandu. The first leg takes you via jeep to Besi Sahar along a rugged and bumpy road. From there, transfer to a private vehicle or tourist bus for the more comfortable stretch back to Kathmandu. Enjoy a hot shower and a relaxing evening in the capital.
