My Journey to Shivapuri Peak: A Hiker’s Delight
December 26, 2024
Last weekend, I decided to escape the chaos of Kathmandu and immerse myself in nature. The destination? Shivapuri Peak, a gem of tranquility just a short drive from the bustling city. Standing tall at 2,732 meters, Shivapuri promised stunning views, lush forests, and a much-needed break from everyday life—and it delivered beyond my expectations
.
The Beginning of the Adventure
I started my journey early in the morning with a drive to Budhanilkantha, about 30 minutes from the city center. As I reached the entrance of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, I could already feel the crisp mountain air filling my lungs. After sorting out the entry permits (a simple process), I was ready to hit the trail.
The moment I stepped into the park, I was surrounded by dense greenery. The trail began with a gentle incline, winding through oak and pine forests. The sound of birdsong and rustling leaves made me feel as if I’d stepped into another world.
Along the Trail
One of the first highlights was Nagi Gompa, a serene Buddhist monastery perched along the way. I paused there, soaking in the spiritual vibes and marveling at the view of Kathmandu Valley below. Sitting there in silence, I felt a calmness I hadn’t experienced in a long time.
As I continued my ascent, the trail became steeper, but the beauty of the surroundings kept me motivated. Every now and then, I’d spot colorful butterflies fluttering around and hear the distant call of birds. It was a reminder of how alive and vibrant nature truly is.
The Final Stretch
The last leg of the hike was the most challenging. The path narrowed, and the incline tested my endurance. But with every step, I could feel the summit getting closer. And then, I made it.
Standing on top of Shivapuri Peak, I was greeted with a breathtaking panorama. The Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges stood majestically in the distance, their snow-capped peaks glistening in the sunlight. Below, the sprawling Kathmandu Valley seemed so far removed from the peace I was experiencing. It was a moment of pure awe and gratitude.
Tips from My Experience
- Start Early: Beginning the hike in the morning gave me plenty of time to enjoy the journey and return before sunset.
- Pack Smart: I carried water, some snacks, and a light jacket—it gets chilly at the top!
- Take Your Time: The hike is moderately challenging, so pace yourself and enjoy the surroundings.
A Hike to Remember
The Shivapuri Peak hike wasn’t just a trek through the woods; it was a journey to reconnect with myself and nature. The combination of serene trails, vibrant wildlife, and stunning views made it one of the most memorable outdoor experiences I’ve ever had.
If you’re in Kathmandu and looking for a day trip that’s both adventurous and rejuvenating, I can’t recommend Shivapuri Peak enough. Trust me, it’s worth every step.
